There’s only one way to Matia, and that’s by boat. The miles-long journey across the water serves as its own preparatory ritual for what lies ahead.

For such a small island, Matia is a striking presence---a green-topped tower jutting out from the blue water below. As you approach, you can’t help but marvel at the steep sandstone cliffs, and the towering mass of trees stacked atop them in a way that seems almost precarious.

Tie off at a mooring buoy and make your way up the ramp to the island. Before you do, listen. For such a quiet place, there is so much to hear—the rhythmic sounds of the water lapping against the rocks and sand, peppered with the urgent avian calls, and the wind ceaselessly rushing through the dense tree leaves. As you make your way along through the old-growth forest, you could almost forget you’re on a tiny island in Salish Sea and instead in the midst of the forests of the Washington mainland further east.

Therein lies the magic of Matia. While its components may be familiar, the uncanny combination of the familiar creates a place that feels fantastical. This fragrance is our homage to this otherworldly island.

Matia opens with the inviting scent of Cardamom intermingled with spicy Ginger Blossom, before giving way to the complex notes of Carrot Seed and Geranium. The fragrance is anchored with notes of Patchouli, Leather Accord, and Black Amber. The composite is a deeply intimate fragrance—a salty skin scent that is both familiar and surreal. Like the island itself, the only way to understand Matia is to experience it for yourself.

About the perfumer: Frank Voekl
A quiet yet charismatic man, Frank believes “in creating fragrances that connect with your soul. My goal is to craft scents that will evoke a profound emotional connection with the power to elicit pure, unadulterated happiness.”

After graduating from ISIPCA, Frank composed his first fragrance, a tiare flower. This creation galvanized his career and paid loving homage to his Tahitian wife. Today, as a contemporary ‘adventurer’ Frank relishes the chance to discover the world, especially his travels to French Polynesia, where its intoxicating air is redolent with the colors and scents of nature in its purest form. These paradisiacal islands are flamboyantly rich in nature and plenitude, they are perhaps his greatest inspiration of all.

“When I worked on Matia with Fulton & Roark, it was important that the fragrance be made up of unique new ingredients that came together into a memorable scent that would allow someone to express themselves. It was also important to use ingredients that have a positive social impact, and so we used Firmenich Naturals Together ingredients such as the French Carrot seeds, Egyptian Geranium, Indonesian Patchouli which are all responsibly sourced.”
